The aim of the paper is to prove existence of minimizers in the space SBV of special functions with bounded variation for a variant of the Mumford-Shah functional, involving also a penalty for non attainment of a prescribed boundary value \(\varphi\): the problem can be written as \[ \min\Bigl\{\int_\Omega|\nabla u|^2+| u-\psi|^2 dx+{\mathcal H}^{n-1}(S^\varphi_u):\;u\in \text{SBV} (\Omega) \Bigr\} \] where \(\psi:\Omega\to\mathbb{R}\) and \(\varphi:\partial\Omega\to\mathbb{R}\) are bounded measurable functions and, denoting by \(u^*\) the trace of \(u\) on \(\partial\Omega\), \(S_u^\varphi\) is given by \[ S^\varphi_u:=S_u\cup\{x\in\partial\Omega:\;u^*(x)\neq\varphi(x)\}. \] More general surface energies and boundary penalties are also considered in the paper.
