The article aims at a radical reappraisal of Kepler's contribution to mathematics by interpreting his quest for the shape of the planetary orbits as the first attempt ever made to develop the phase sensitive quadrature detection method. Almost a half of the text is made up of quotations. The principles of some modern phase and frequency detection techniques are outlined in the light of Kepler's ideas and in mathematical detail with emphasis on computer and MRI tomography.
