An explicit, adaptive grid algorithm for one-dimensional initial value problems (Q1379056)

This paper presents an adaptive grid method for evolutionary problems in one spatial dimension. The numerical method for moving the grid is explicit in time, while the solution method for the partial differential equation is implicit. The grid selection is based on the identification of features requiring high resolution and the construction of a corresponding monitor function. This monitor function is analytically integrable, thereby simplifying its equidistribution. Several example computations are exhibited, including the merger of features and the possibility of a feature leaving the domain.
