The authors consider the space \({\mathbf F} ^{n\times n}\) of \(n\times n\) square matrices over the field \({\mathbf F}=\mathbb{R}\) or \(\mathbb{C}\) and study the norms on \({\mathbf F}^{n\times n}\) that are induced by a symmetric norm on \({\mathbf F}^n\). Special attention is paid to the \(c\)-norms on \({\mathbf F}^{n\times n}\), which are induced by the vector \(c\)-norms: \(| x| _c:=\max\{| c^tPx| : P\) is a permutation matrix\(\}\), \(c\in{\mathbf F}^n\). The main result is a characterization of the isometries for the induced \(c\)-norm. The authors also characterize extreme points of the dual norms of the induced \(c\)-norms, and examine the best constants for inequalities relating \(c\)-norms and other common matrix norms.
