The authors replace the trivial group bundle usually considered in WZW models by a twisted bundle. More precisely, the considered group is \(SL(N,\mathbb C)\) and the twist comes from the finite Heisenberg group corresponding to the \(N\)th primitive root of unity. The case of elliptic curves (e.g. genus one) is studied partly along the lines developed by \textit{A. Tsuchiya, K. Ueno} and \textit{Y. Yamada} [Adv. Stud. Pure Math. 19, 459-566 (1989; Zbl 0696.17010)] for the non-twisted case. For representations of the affine Lie algebra (here \(sl(N,\mathbb C)\)) the Sugawara construction yields an action of the Virasoro algebra on the involved representation spaces. Conformal coinvariants (CC) and conformal blocks (CB) are introduced. A similar picture appears as in the non-twisted case. For models at the critical level \(k\) of the representations (here \(k=-N\)) the Sugawara operators commute with the operators of the affine Lie algebra and it is shown that the model describes the \(XYZ\) Gaudin model. In the general case, sheaves of conformal coinvariants and conformal blocks are introduced over the subspace S of \(\mathcal H\times \mathbb C^L\) given by \((\tau,z)\) with \(\tau\in\mathcal H\), the elliptic modular parameter, and those \(z\in \mathbb C^L\) for which all components are pairwise different modulo the lattice defined via \(\tau\). As in the non-twisted case for the off-critical levels (\(k\neq -N\)) it is shown that there is an action of the Virasoro sheaf on the sheaves of CC and CB. These sheaves carry a \(\mathcal D_S\)-module structure and are locally free coherent sheaves with flat connection. The equations of the connection coincide with the elliptic Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations introduced by \textit{P. Etingof} [Commun. Math. Phys. 159, 471-502 (1994; Zbl 0803.17008)]. Finally, modular invariance of the CC and the CB is shown and the modular transformation property of the connection is exhibited.
