The metric dimension \(\mu\dim\) of a metric space \(X\) is the least integer \(m\) for which \(X\) admits open covers of order \(\leq m+1\) with arbitrarily small meshes [\textit{T. Goto,} Commentat. Math. Univ. Carol. 37, No. 4, 803-808 (1996; Zbl 0886.55002)]. This differs in general from covering dimension, dim, [\textit{R. Engelking}, Theory of dimensions, finite and infinite (1995; Zbl 0872.54002)]. The main theorem of this paper is as follows (by hyperplane in \(\mathbb R^n\) is meant an \((n-1)\)-dimensional affine subspace of \(\mathbb R^n\)). Theorem. Let \(n\), \(m\), \(k\) be integers such that \(0\leq m\leq n-1\), \(n-1\geq 1\), and \(m\leq k\leq\min \{2m,n-1\}\). Then there exists a subset \(X\subset\mathbb R^n\) such that (i) \(\mu\dim X=m\) and \(\dim X=k\), (ii) \(\mu\dim (X\cap H)=m\) for every hyperplane \(H\) in \(\mathbb R^n\), and (iii) if either \(k<n-1\) or \(k=n-1=m\), then \(\dim (X\cap H)=k\) for every hyperplane \(H\) in \(\mathbb R^n\).
