The authors obtain an affirmative answer to \textit{F. G. Arenas}' question [Quest. Answers Gen. Topology 14, No. 1, 59-70 (1996; Zbl 0846.54025)]. Namely, Theorem 2.7. A metrizable space \(X\) has the order dimension O-dim if and only if \(X\) has large inductive dimension IND. They also discuss the relationship between Arenas's transfinite definition and \textit{R. Pol}'s one in [Finite-to-one mappings on infinite-dimensional compacta, in `Papers on general topology and applications (Amsterdam 1994), Ann. New York Acad. Sci. 788, 175-183 (1996)]. Finally, they compute the value of O-dim \(S_\alpha\) for Smirnov's compactum \(S_\alpha\) with each ordinal number \(\alpha < \omega_1\) so that O-dim \(S_\alpha =\alpha\) holds.
