This paper studies hyperplane sections \(X\) of non-reduced projective curves \(Y\subseteq {\mathbb{P}}^{r+1}\). The main aim is to give a sort of Castelnuovo theory for such curves (e.g. an upper bound on \(p_a(Y)\) knowing properties of \(X\)). Since \(X\) is non-reduced, also the definition of being in linearly generic position can be problematic for \(X\), hence a suitable definition is given (that of multiple flag of \(Y\) at a point, which involves the intersections of \(X\) with all the infinitesimal neighborhoods of \(Y_{\text{red}}\)). This is done in the first two sections, where also a method is introduced to study the postulation of \(X\) when assumptions on \(Y\) are given. -- The third section is dedicated to the following problem: Given a 0-dimensional scheme \(X \subseteq {\mathbb{P}}^{r}\), find a way to get curves \(Y\subseteq {\mathbb{P}}^{r+1}\) with \(X\) as hyperplane section. The last part of the paper is dedicated to the study of the case of positive characteristic, extending results from the previous sections and from other authors.
