    Let \(\mathcal A\) denote the family of analytic maps of the unit disk \(\mathbf D\) into itself with \(\phi (0)=0\) and \(0<| \phi '(0)| <1\). For every \(\phi\) in \(\mathcal A\) there exists an analytic map \(\sigma\) ( the Koenigs function of \(\phi\)) defined on \(\mathbf D\) such, that \(\sigma (0)=0\), \(\sigma^{'}(0)\neq 0\) and \(\sigma \circ \phi = \lambda \sigma\), with \(\lambda = \phi '(0)\). Also, the map \(\phi\) induces a bounded composition operator on the Hardy space \(H^2(\mathbf D)\), given by the formula \(C_{\phi}(f)= f\circ \phi\). If \(\mathcal K\) is the subspace of all compact operators on \(H^2(\mathbf D)\), then the spectral radius of the projection of \(C_{\phi}\) in \(H^2(\mathbf D)/\mathcal K \) is called the essential spectral radius of \(C_{\phi}\) and denoted by \(r_e(C_{\phi})\). Recently, \textit{P. S. Bourdon} and \textit{J. H. Shapiro} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 10, No. 2, 299-325 (1997; Zbl 0870.30018)] found a lower bound \(r_e(C_{\phi})\geq | \lambda| ^{h(\sigma)/2}\), where \(\phi \in \mathcal A\) and \(h(\sigma)= \sup \{p>0: \sigma\in H^p (\mathbf D) \}\) denotes the Hardy number of \(\sigma\). In [J. Funct. Anal. 143, 129-156 (1997; Zbl 0871.30033)] the author showed, that \(r_e(C_{\phi})\leq | \lambda| ^{h(\sigma)/2}\) under the hypothesis that \(\phi\) is univalent. In the present paper, he drops the univalence condition and extends his previous result to every \(\phi \in \mathcal A\).
