The aim of the present paper is to describe the spectrum of the Laplacian on a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold with constant curvature \(-1\) outside a compact set. The author proves that the continuous spectrum \(\left[{1\over 4},\infty\right)\) of the Laplacian \(\Delta\) rotates around \({1\over 4}\) through the angle \(-2\text{ Arg }\lambda\) into the continuous spectrum \(\sigma_c(\lambda)= {1\over 4}+\lambda^{- 2}\mathbb{R}^+\) of the transformed Laplacian \(\Delta(\lambda)\). The embedded eigenvalues are unchanged for \(|\text{Arg }\lambda|< \pi\), and so are the isolated eigenvalues for \(|\text{Arg }\lambda|< {\pi\over 2}\). Resonances become discrete eigenvalues after being crossed by \(\sigma_c(\lambda)\). The transformed Eisenstein series are discussed, as well as the analytic continuation of the resolvent kernel, the resonances, and the resonance functions.
