The Gauss Center for Scientific Computation was established 1993 jointly by the Minerva-Stiftung (Germany) and the Weizmann Institute (Israel). Its mission is to develop new fundamental computational approaches in physics, chemistry, applied mathematics and engineering. The recent research of the author and his collaborators is reported in this paper, emphasizing main ideas and interrelations between various fields. The research topics at the Gauss Center have involved the following directions: 1. New multigrid methods for steady-state fluid dynamics and other systems of non-elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs). 2. Multilevel approaches to time-dependent PDEs with applications to oceanic and atmospheric flows. 3. Direct multigrid solvers for inverse problems and system identification. 4. Optimal control -- feedback control. 5. Optimal location of singularities of PDEs, integrated into the multigrid PDE solver. 6. New multilevel algorithms for highly indefinite problems. 7. Multigrid solvers for the Dirac equation. 8. Multiresolution representation of the inverse matrix of a discretized differential operator. 9. Multiscale representation and fast calculation of eigenfunctions. 10. Multiscale Monte Carlo approaches for solving the Schrödinger equation. 11. Multiscale approaches to molecular docking. 12. Multigrid methods for integro-differential equations. 13. Multiscale algorithms for the fast evaluation and inversion of the Radon transform, applications to tomography and airplane and satellite radar reconstruction. 14. Multiscale algorithms for early vision tasks such as surface reconstruction, edge and fiber detection segmentation and meaningful picture coarsening.
