Spatial economic theory, although originally based on continuous space models, are mostly studied as dicrete equilibria. This book builds on the traditional continuous approach, and develops many aspects of spatial theory by way of variational calculus in two dimensions, vividly illustrated by a wealth of graphical material. It discusses Weber's location model, the Euler equation and geodesics, Beckman's flow model of spatial economic exchange, market areas under different price policies, land use theory, migration models, spatial cycles and transportation networks.
