The equation \[ w_t-6(w+\varepsilon^2 w^2) w_x+w_{xxx}=0 \] [cf. \textit{R. M. Miura, C. S. Gardner} and \textit{M. D. Kruskal}, J. Math. Phys. 9, 1204-1209 (1968; Zbl 0283.35019)], was a key ingredient in the proof (due to the second named author) that the KdV equation has an infinite number of conservation laws. Earlier \textit{M. D. Kruskal} and \textit{N. J. Zabusky} [|J. Math. Phys. 5, 231-244 (1964)], using Riemann invariants, derived the KdV equation from a fourth order quasilinear PDE, whose discretized approximation has been used in the famous Fermi-Pasta-Ulam numerical experiment. In the present paper, by a modification of the Kruskal and Zabusky procedure, the Gardner equation is shown to arise as an approximation to another class of fourth order quasilinear PDE.
