The formula in the title [\textit{I. G. Macdonald}, Invent. Math. 56, 93-95 (1980; Zbl 0426.22009)] gives the volume of a compact Lie group \(G\) as the product of Lebesgue measure of the Lie algebra modulo the Chevalley lattice times the superficial measures of the odd-dimensional spheres whose product is rational homotopy equivalent to \(G\). The author obtains this formula by decomposing the volume into those of a maximal torus and of the corresponding flag manifold \(G/T\). The latter volume is computed using the top term of the Todd class.
