The authors discuss the asymptotic expansion of solutions of the following difference equation \[ G(z)P_1(z) =G(\lambda z) P_2(z)+ P_0(z), \quad 0<\lambda<1, \tag{1} \] where \(P_0\), \(P_1\), \(P_2\) are entire functions with some special properties. The main tool for getting information on the asymptotics of \(G\) is the Mellin transform \[ M[f](s)= \int_0^\infty f(x)x^{s-1} dx. \] Another method applied in the paper to get the results is the method of \(q\)-difference equations of the form \[ a_1(x)G(qx) =a_2(x)G(x)+ a_0(x), \quad q= \lambda^{-1} <1. \] The general solution of this equation is the sum of the solution of the related homogeneous equation \(f_h\) and a particular solution of the non-homogeneous equation \(f_p\). Having this, the authors establish asymptotic formulas for \(f_h\) and \(f_p\) to get the desired results. Finally, equation (1) with polynomial coefficients is investigated.
