Let \(f\) be a \(2\pi\)-periodic function. The author defines the continuity module of order \(1-1/p\) as follows \(\omega_{1-1/p}(f,\delta):=\sup_a\sup(\sum^{n-1}_{i=0}|f(x_{i+1})-f(x_i)|^p)^{1/p}\), \(a\) being the left extremity of the interval \([a,a+2\pi]\), and the second sup being taken with respect to all partitions of this interval with \(\max\{|x_i-x_{i-1}|: 1 \leq i\leq n\}\leq\delta\). The author considers the space \(C_p\) of functions for which \(\lim_{\delta\to 0}\omega_{1-{1\over p}} (f,\delta)=0\) with the norm \(|f|_p=\max(|f|_C,V_p(f))\) where \(V_p(f):=\omega_{1-1/p}(f,2\pi)\) with respect to which \(C_p\) is a Banach space. In the present paper the author studies the polynomials of the best approximation in \(C_p\) and establishes an inequality of Marchaud-M. P. Timan type in the same space.
