In [\textit{R. S. Hamilton}, Contemp. Math. 71, 237-262 (1988; Zbl 0663.53031)] and [\textit{B. Chow}, J. Differ. Geom. 33, 325-334 (1991; Zbl 0734.53033)] it was shown that on any compact oriented Riemann surface any metric evolving under the Ricci flow converges to a metric of constant curvature. A main ingredient for the proof is a Harnack inequality which the authors of the paper under review rederive using only local quantities. An advantage of this new proof could be that it might carry over to higher dimensions.
