The investigation of subfactors started in the papers by V. F. R. Jones, Y. Kawahigashi and A. Ocneanu is continued. So-called ``vertical'' and ``horizontal'' subfactors are considered, arising from a non-degenerate commuting square of finite-dimensional \(C^*\)-algebras. V. F. R. Jones raised in his talk at Aarhus in June, 1995, the following questions: Is there any relation between these two subfactors? Is the finite depth condition for one of the two related to that of the other? In this work, the author gives a positive answer to the questions of Jones, i.e. it is proved that if one of the two is of finite depth, so is the other. Generally speaking, he proves a more general result on flatness and also gives an example of a new finite principal graph as its application.
