A multigrid method for certain finite difference and finite volume schemes for elliptic partial differential equations is introduced. A parallelizable version is also defined and serves as a theoretical tool for deriving suitable implementations. For indefinite problems, this analysis provides a prediction of a suitable mesh for the coarsest grid. Numerical experiments show the efficiency for 3D diffusion problems with discontinuous coefficients and highly indefinite Helmholtz equations.
