Let \(\phi\) be a modular Hecke eigenform of half-integral weight \(k+1/2\) on \(\Gamma_0(4),\) and let \(\phi\) be normalized and in Kohnen's plus-space. In [Prog. Math. 138, 105-128 (1996; Zbl 0863.11031)], \textit{A. Balog, H. Darmon} and \textit{K. Ono} stress the importance of looking at a certain type of congruence condition on the Fourier coefficients of \(\phi\). Let \(p\) be an odd prime number, \(v_p\) a corresponding valuation of the algebraic closure of \(\mathbb{Q}\). Let \(k\) be 1 modulo \((p-1)\). Then \(\phi\) satisfies a ``type \(a\) quadratic congruence'' if for all positive integers \(d\) we have: \(v_p\) of the \(d\)th Fourier-coefficient is \(\geq 1\), provided that \(d\) satisfies some quadratic condition modulo \(p\). The main Theorem is that certain paucity assumptions on the space of cusp forms \(S_2(\Gamma_0(p))\) imply that \(\phi\) satisfies such a quadratic congruence, if \(k\equiv 1\pmod{(p-1)p^r}\) for sufficiently large \(r\). The author points out that the assumption on \(S_2(\Gamma_0(p))\) is only a means to make sure of the existence of a certain \(p\)-adic modular form in two variables, which is closer to the ``true'' reason for the quadratic congruence to be valid.
