Let \(X\) be a connected space and \(f,g:X\to X\) continuous maps such that \(f\) and \(g\) induce the same map on \(\pi_1(X)\) and on \(\pi_n(X)\otimes\mathbb{Q}\) for \(n>1\). The authors show that this implies \(\text{tr }H_n(f;\mathbb{Q})=\text{tr}H_n(g;\mathbb{Q})\). In particular, \(f\) and \(g\) have the same Lefschetz number if \(\sum_n\dim H^{n}(X;\mathbb{Q})<\infty\). If \(X\) is a manifold one can conclude that \(\deg f=\deg g\). Moreover, the authors obtain interesting expressions for the degree and Lefschetz number of a map \(f:X\to X\) if \(X\) is a finite simply connected CW-complex satisfying \(\sum_n\dim\pi_n(X)\otimes\mathbb{Q}<\infty\) (an ``elliptic space''): \(\deg(f)=\prod_j\mu_j/\prod_j\lambda_j\) where \(\lambda_j\) are the eigenvalues of \(\pi_{\roman{odd}}(f)\otimes\mathbb{Q}\) and \(\mu_j\) are the eigenvalues of \(\pi_{\roman{even}}(f)\otimes\mathbb{Q}\). As to the Lefschetz number the authors give an elegant proof of \textit{S. Halperin}'s result [Astérisque 113-114, 198-205 (1984; Zbl 0546.55015)] that \(\Lambda(f)= \lim_{t\to1}\prod_n\frac{\det(1-t^{2n+2}A_{2n+1})}{\det(1-t^{2n}A_{2n})}\) where \(A_n\) denotes the linear map \(\pi_n(f)\otimes\mathbb{Q}\). The proof of this result on p. 237 should be labelled ``Proof of Theorem 4.1''.
