The author studies the existence of oscillatory solutions to second-order nonlinear differential equations \[ y''+y\exp(| y|^m-x)=0,\qquad \text{on }[0,\infty),\quad m>0.\tag{1} \] \textit{F. W. Atkinson} and \textit{Sh. Chen} [CMS Conf. Proc. 8, 43-55 (1987; Zbl 0629.34038)] proved nonoscillation of (1) for \(0<m<2\) and \textit{F. W. Atkinson} [Pac. J. Math. 5, 643-647 (1955; Zbl 0065.32001)] posed the conjecture that (1) has oscillatory solutions for \(m\geq 2\). This conjecture is proved in the following way: The existence of oscillatory solutions to (1) for \(m>2\) is obtained from the existence theorem for a more general equation of the form \[ y''+a(x)f(y)=0,\qquad 0<x<\infty.\tag{2} \] Pohozaev's energy function and integration techniques are used. By a similar method the existence is proved of an oscillatory solution to (1) in the borderline case when \(m=2\). The author presents conditions under which equation (2) is nonoscillatory and he shows how it can be applied to deduce nonoscillation of (1) for \(0<m<2\). The paper is well organised and written; it completely settles the question of existence of oscillatory solutions to (1).
