Let \((A,m)\) be a noetherian local ring and \(I\) an ideal of \(A\). In this paper, the authors study the relationship between the properties of the graded rings \(R(I)=\bigoplus_{n\geq 0}I^n\) and \(G(I)=\bigoplus_{n\geq 0}I^n/I^{n+1}\) associated to \(I\) (especially, the structure of their canonical modules) and the vanishing property of their local cohomology modules by making use of the sheaf cohomology theory (in particular, the theory of duality). After long preliminaries, they show that in case some \(R(I^s)\) is Gorenstein, vanishing conditions on the local cohomology of \(R(I)\) imply that the canonical module of \(G(I)\) is of the expected form, and the converse also holds under certain conditions. The authors give a characterization of the Gorenstein property of the Veronese subring of the (multi-)Rees ring in terms of the Hilbert coefficients of \(I\). They also give some interesting results on the Serre conditions on \(R(I)\).
