Let \(K\) be a convex body in the Euclidean space \({\mathbb E}^n\) and \({\mathcal L}^n_i\) the Grassmannian of \(i\)-dimensional linear subspaces of \({\mathbb E}^n\). For \(L \in {\mathcal L}^n_i\) the set \(K| L\) is the image of \(K\) under orthogonal projection onto \(L\) and \(V_i(K| L)\) is its \(i\)-dimensional volume. An old conjecture says that every \(n\)-dimensional convex body is determined (up to translation or reflection) by \(V_1,\ldots,V_{n-1}\). This is false in general as shown by , but is true for most convex bodies (in the sense of Baire category): they are indeed determined by one of the \(V_i\) \((2\leq i \leq n-2)\) or by \(V_1\) and \(V_{n-1}\) [see \textit{P. Goodey, R. Schneider} and \textit{W. Weil}, Bolyai Soc. Math. Stud. 6, 23-53 (1997; Zbl 0881.52002); \textit{R. Schneider}, NATO ASI Ser., Ser. C, Math. Phys. Sci. 440, 273-299 (1994; Zbl 0815.52003); \textit{C. Bauer}, Arch. Math. 64, No. 1, 69-74 (1995; Zbl 0813.52011)]. In this paper it is shown that only projections of some small parts of \(K\) are sufficient to obtain such determination. It is also shown that the intrinsic volumes of \(K| L\) (generalized girth functions of \(K\)) can be used instead of volumes.
