Let \(S\) be a complete smooth toric surface arising from a fan \(\Delta\) and let \(C\) be a divisor on \(S\) stable under the action of the big torus of \(S\). The main result of the article under review asserts that if \(C + K_{S}\) and \(C + 2K_{S}\) are ample, then the corank of the Gaussian map \(\Gamma_{C,K_C}\) equals \(h^{0}(S,\mathcal{O}_{S}(-K_{S}))\). This result generalises previous work of \textit{J. Duflot} and \textit{R. Miranda} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 330, No. 1, 447-459 (1992; Zbl 0769.14011)] on the Gaussian map on Hirzebruch surfaces. The proof of the main result includes several explicit calculations in terms of \(\Delta\) and \(C\). As an application of the result, certain pairs of birational maps from a given curve into the projective plane are excluded.
