In [J. Am. Math. Soc. 6, No. 4, 851-874 (1993; Zbl 0827.46008)], \textit{W. T. Gowers} and \textit{B. Maurey} solved a long standing open problem whether every Banach space contains an infinite unconditional basic sequence. They constructed a Banach space \(X\) such that no two closed infinite-dimensional subspaces \(Z_1\), \(Z_2\) of \(X\) form a topological direct sum. Such spaces are called hereditarily indecomposable, and they obviously do not contain infinite unconditional basic sequences. A question concerning a related notion, the Gordon-Lewis property, has been raised by \textit{W. B. Johnson} in [Lect. Notes Math. 1317, 201-203 (1988; Zbl 0651.46018)]. We answer this question by constructing a Banach space whose no closed infinite-dimensional subspace has the Gordon-Lewis property. This space is also hereditarily indecomposable.
