Let \((X,L)\) be a polarized abelian variety. By Lefschetz's theorem the line bundle \(L^{\otimes n}\) is very ample for \(n\geq 3\), i.e., defines a projective embedding \(\varphi_{L^{\otimes n}}: X\hookrightarrow \mathbb{P}^N\). Let \(I(L^{\times n})\) denote the homogeneous ideal of \(X\) in \(\mathbb{P}^N\). A result due to Kempf states that for \(n\geq 4\) the ideal \(I(L^{\otimes n})\) is generated by quadrics. Much less is known about primitive line bundles. Suppose \(A\) is an abelian surface and \(L\) a primitive ample line bundle on \(A\), i.e., \(L\) is of type \((1,d)\) for some positive integer \(d\). By Reider's theorem \(L\) is very ample for \(d\geq 5\) and \(A\) general. It is shown that the ideal \(I(L)\) is generated by quadrics, if \(d\geq 10\).
