The authors investigate numerically an axisymmetric laminar flow generated by a rotating disk inside a cylinder, partially filled with fluid-saturated porous medium and partially with fluid. The goal is to establish the flow pattern in the cylinder, with particular attention on the influence of the convective transfer in the porous region. The study is based on the Navier-Stokes equations in the fluid region and on the Darcy-Brinkman-Lapwood equation in the fluid-saturated porous region. The continuity equation is assumed to hold in both regions. The authors use a conservative finite difference scheme to approximate the spatial derivatives, while Adam-Bashforth explicit finite difference formula is applied to the time derivatives. Results from the numerical experiments are compared to existing numerical solutions and experimental pressure measurements in similar geometries. It is shown that the advective porewater transport in sediments is predictable in the framework of this study.
