The authors consider the Dirichlet problem for the quasilinear system \[ -\Delta_p u = F_u(u,v), \quad\Delta_q v = F_v(u,v), \quad \text{in} \Omega, \qquad u = v = 0, \quad \text{on} \partial \Omega, \tag{P} \] on a given bounded domain \(\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^N\) with smooth boundary, where \(N>2\), \(1<p\), \(q<N\) and \(F\) is a \(C^1\) function. The authors impose the following coupling condition: \(F_u(0,v)=0\) and \(F_v(u,0)=0\) have only finitely many solutions. Then this problem possesses a variational structure. Using a critical point theorem of Benci and Fortunato and the duality method of Clarke and Ekeland, viewing the problem (P) as an infinite dimensional Hamiltonian system, the existence of at least one non-trivial solution is proved when \(2N/(N+2)<p<2\) and \(F\) satisfies certain superlinear growth conditions. A similar result is also proved by the authors by using the Galerkin approximation method and the saddle point theorem of Rabinowitz.
