The authors consider functional equations of the form \[ f(x)= \sum^N_{k= 0} c_kf(2x- k), \] where the coefficients \(c_k\) are matrices and \(f\) is a vector-valued function. If the coefficients \(c_k\) are scalars existence and uniqueness properties are known. This paper considers analogous questions for the matrix case. Conditions for existence and uniqueness are given in terms of the convergence properties of an infinite product. Fundamental differences between solutions in matrix and scalar cases are examined. In particular, it is shown that solutions in the matrix case exist even when the infinite product diverges.
