The author studies positivity and compactness of the \(\ell_2\)-operators defined by infinite matrices whose diagonal and first row and column are given (with zeros otherwise). The distribution of eigenvalues is related to the diagonal entries. These matrices are used as a representative model for the Gram operator of a sesquilinear form. The completeness problem of an eigenvector system is also considered.
