    The authors use a generalization of the classical theory of thermoelasticity due to Lord and Shulman which takes into account only one parameter for the relaxation time. Two problems are considered: the first one is a one-dimensional problem with a heat source distributed over a plane area in an infinite isotropic solid, and the second one is a two-dimensional problem with instantaneous heat sources in an infinite transversely isotropic elastic medium. These problems are written in the form of vector-matrix differential equations, and for the one-dimensional problem the Laplace transform domain, and for the two-dimensional problem the Laplace-Fourier domain are used. Finally, the authors apply an eigenvalue approach due to \textit{N. C. Das} et al. [J. Thermal Stress. 6, 35-43 (1983); Mech. Res. Commun. 12, 31-40 (1985)]. The distributions of displacements, temperature and stresses in dependence on time are presented graphically. The results obtained are compared with known results.
