Put \(S= \sum_{a<n\leq b}\exp(2\pi if(n))\), suppose that \(| f'''(n)|\asymp A^{-1}\). By a result of van der Corput we have \[ S= O((b- a)A^{-{1\over 6}})+ O((b- a)^{{1\over 2}}, A^{{1\over 6}}). \] This estimate is sharpened for \(A\in ((b- a)^{{3\over 2}}, (b-a)^2]\). If the function \(f\) is thrice differentiable on \([a,b]\), \(c_1A^{-1}< f'''(n)\leq c_2A^{-1}\) \((c_1, c_2>0)\) and \(0< A\leq (b-a)^2\), then \[ S= O((b- a) A^{-{1\over 6}}). \] The constant in \(O\)-estimate depends only on \(c_1\) and \(c_2\).
