Let \(AG\) denote the class of all amenable groups. The class \(EG\) of elementary (amenable) groups was introduced by \textit{M. Day} in [Ill. J. Math. 1, 509-544 (1957; Zbl 0078.29402)] as the smallest class of groups that contains the finite and the commutative groups and is closed under the above operations. Day posed the following question: Do the classes \(AG\) and \(EG\) coincide? A negative answer to this question was given by the author in [Sov. Math., Dokl. 28, 23-26; translation from Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 271, 30-33 (1983; Zbl 0547.20025)]. A further problem arises: Does the relation \(AG=EG\) hold if we restrict ourselves to the class of finitely defined groups? We announce a negative solution to the problem in the class of finitely defined groups by means of another example.
