The author considers the linearized system which describes the motion of compressible viscous and heat-conductive gases in an exterior domain \(\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^3\), i.e. \(\rho_t +\gamma \text{div} v=0\) in \(\Omega \times (0,\infty)\), \(v_t -\alpha \Delta v-\beta \nabla \text{div} v+ \gamma \nabla\rho +\omega\nabla \theta=0\) in \(\Omega \times (0,\infty)\), \(\theta_t-\kappa \Delta\theta +\omega \text{div} v=0\) in \(\Omega \times (0,\infty)\), \(v=0\), \(\theta=0\) on \(\partial \Omega \times (0,\infty)\), \((\rho,v, \theta) (.,0)= (\rho_0,v_0, \theta_0)\) in \(\Omega \). The main result is a decay estimate for higher order derivatives in domains \(\Omega_R :=\{x \in \Omega\mid | x| <R\}\), which can be stated as follows: if \(1<q< \infty\), \(\rho_0\in H^{2,q} (\Omega)\), \((v_0, \theta_0)\in H^{1,q} (\Omega)^4\) such that \((\rho_0, v_0,\theta_0) (x) =0\) for \(| x|\geq R\) and \(\int_{\Omega_R} \rho_0dx=0\), then \(\| \partial^k_t \rho(t) \|_{H^{2,q} (\Omega_R)} +\| \partial^k_t (v(t), \theta(t)) \|_{H^{3,q} (\Omega_R)}\leq C(q, R,k) t^{- {3\over 2}-k}(\| \rho_0\|_{H^{2,q}} +\| (v_0,\theta_0) \|_{H^{1,q}})\) for \(k\in \mathbb{N} \cup\{0\}\).
