The paper presents a novel reduced-order state observer for the estimation of the entire state vector of linear multivariable time-invariant discrete-time systems. For a system of order \(n\) with \(m\) outputs the reduced observer known from the literature is of order \((n-m)\). The order of the novel state observer introduced in this paper is equal only to the number of unstable and/or poorly damped eigenvalues of the given system. This is an amazing result. It makes the proposed observer very attractive for applications to high order systems. A simple design method is presented and applied to a numerical example.
