\textit{D. Quillen} [Math. Ann. 194, 197-212 (1971; Zbl 0225.55015)]\ computed the cohomology rings of extra-special \(p\)-groups for the prime 2, however for odd primes these rings remain unknown. In this paper the author determines the cohomology rings after localizing with respect to certain multiplicative sets defined by a maximal split elementary abelian \(p\)-subgroup. He achieves this using the Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence applied to the central product of the group with the circle \(S^1\), a construction attributed to \textit{I. J. Leary} [Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 110, No. 1, 25-32 (1991; Zbl 0736.20026)]\ et al. He then goes on to use similar methods in studying more general groups, for example the \(p\)-Sylow subgroup of \(\text{GL}_n(F_p)\) generated by upper unitriangular matrices, this being relevant to the computation of the cohomology of the Mathieu group \(M_{12}\) [\textit{A. Adem, J. Maginnis, R. J. Milgram}, J. Algebra 139, No. 1, 90-133 (1991; Zbl 0743.20052)].
