Based on a formal systems approach to design including theorems, analysis of design principles and information theory some cases from various engineering fields are presented. The book describes methods for efficient design based on AI and optimization theory and provides a methodology for developing the next generation computer software for advanced computer aided design systems. It includes five main parts: properties, paradigms and evolutionary structure of the design process, formal design theory, algorithmic and heuristic methods for design decision support, detailed design applications and practical considerations.
