The author proposes a rigorous time-slicing construction of the phase space path integrals (initiated by Feynman himself and studied by Tobocman in 1956) in flat space for both quantum mechanics and quantum field theory. The procedure avoids the imaginary-time detour. The class of models considered includes Schrödinger Hamiltonians with smooth scalar potentials of any power growth at infinity. The author also allows for time-dependent Hamiltonians. The approach admits a great variety of concrete discretizations known to the practitioners in the field and so may serve as a justification of their work.
