The degrees of maps between manifolds (Q1395403)

In this highly interesting paper the authors investigate the question of which integers can occur as the degree of a map between two closed manifolds of the same dimension. For surfaces the answer is known. Here, the authors deal with the case of \((n-1)\)-connected \((2n)\)-manifolds (\(n\geq 2\)). The authors provide a complete characterization of the possible degrees in terms of homomorphisms of the homology in the middle dimension. If \(n\equiv 3,5,7 \mod 8\) and if both manifolds have the same rank in the homology groups in the middle dimension they explicitly describe the possible values of the degree function.
