As the authors indicate, the article is the first of several planned papers whose aim is to develop contexts for 2-dimensional versions of holonomy. Let \(G,C\) be groupoids over the same object set and let \(C\) be totally intransitive (i.e. the sourse and target maps coincide). Then the action of \(G\) on \(C\) is defined as a partially defined function \(*\colon C\times G\to C\) satisfying some natural conditions. A crossed module of groupoids consists of a morphism \(\delta\colon C\to G\) of groupoids \(C\) and \(G\) which is the identity on the object set, together with an action of \(G\) on \(C\) satisfying \(\delta(c*a)=-a+\delta c+a\) and \(c*\delta c_1=-c_1+c+c_1\) for \(c,c_1\in C(x,x)\) and \(a\in G(x,y)\). An actor 2-crossed module consists of a certain complex \(L\to M\to P\), where \(P\) is a group and \(L\to M\) is a crossed module. The article gives a detailed description of the structure of the actor 2-crossed module related to the automorphisms of a crossed module of groupoids.
