Let \(A\) and \(B\) be unital Banach algebras, \(A\) subalgebra of \(B\), and let \(M_{n}(A)\) be the algebra of all \(n\times n\) matrices with entries from \(A\). If \(A\) is inverse closed in \(B\), then is \(M_{n}(A)\) inverse closed in \(M_{n}(B)\)? The invariance of the spectrum for symmetric Banach \(^*\)-algebras is the subject of the author's articles [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 126, 3545-3547 (1998; Zbl 0905.46034) and Stud. Math. 141, 251-261 (2000; Zbl 0996.46021)]. In this paper the author continues this study and he gives affirmative answers to the above question for three important cases: when \(A\) is dense in \(B\), when \(A\) is continuously embedded in \(B\), and when \(A\) is a symmetric Banach \(^*\)-algebra.
