A paracompact scattered space admits a continuous selection if each of its points has a countable pseudobase. This together with a result of \textit{V. Gutev} and \textit{T. Nogura} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. 80, 235-256 (2000; Zbl 1027.54014)] gives that a countable regular space has a continuous selection if and only if it is scattered. An example shows that paracompactness cannot be replaced in the above result by countable compactness and collectionwise normality even for first countable scattered spaces. Another example shows that the existence of a countable pseudobase cannot be omitted even for regular Lindelöf linearly ordered scattered spaces.
