Starting from the question ``Are there complete CMC surfaces with umbilics which are conformally cylinders'', the authors investigate surfaces of constant mean curvature \(H= H_0\neq 0\) (``CMC surfaces'') with a nontrivial fundamental group in a Weierstraß\ type representation, the so-called DPW representation [\textit{J. Dorfmeister, F. Pedit} and \textit{H. Wu}, Commun. Anal. Geom. 6, 633--668 (1998; Zbl 0932.58018)]. In Section 2 intrinsic and extrinsic symmetries of a CMC immersion are expressed in terms of meromorphic potentials which replace the usual Weierstraß\ data in the DPW method. Sections 3--4 deal with the translation of the symmetry condition of Section 2 to the so-called holomorphic potentials of the DPW method, and the actions ``dressing from the \(r\)-circle'' (Section 3) and ``dressing from the unit circle'' (Section 4) are studied. Using dressing actions to satisfy the conditions for the special case of single periodic CIVIC immersions from the open unit disk into \(\mathbb{R}^3\), the authors finally (Section 5) construct an infinite-dimensional family of conformal CMC cylinders with umbilics. A particularly natural class of such cylinders is complete.
