The main result of the paper under review is the following: Let \(D,D'\subset\mathbb{C}^n\), \(n\geq 2\) be two bounded domains with smooth real-analytic boundary and assume that \(\partial D\) is simply connected and that \(\partial D'\) is connected and real-algebraic. Then there exists a proper holomorphic correspondence \(F: D\to D'\) if and only if there exist open pieces of \(\partial D\) and \(\partial D'\) that are biholomorphically equivalent. This amounts to proving that a local biholomorphic map between open pieces of \(\partial D\) and \(\partial D'\) extends to a holomorphic correspondence of the domains. Such an extension phenomenon can be viewed as a generalization to holomorphic correspondences of previously known results of \textit{S. I. Pinchuk} [Math. USSR, Sb. 34, 503-519 (1978) translation from Mat. Sb., N. Ser. 105(147), 574-593 (1978; Zbl 0389.32008)] and \textit{X. Huang} and \textit{S. Ji} [Math. Res. Lett. 5, No. 1-2, 247-260 (1998; Zbl 0912.32010)] where extension results of local biholomorphic maps along paths were obtained. As is customary in this field, the main tool in the proof is the technique of Segre varieties introduced in the subject by \textit{S. Webster} in [Invent. Math. 43, 53-68 (1977; Zbl 0348.32005)]. The proof also uses in an essential way the algebraicity assumption on \(\partial D'\) which seems, however, quite artificial since it is reasonable to conjecture that the same result holds for merely real-analytic target domains.
