The paper is a continuation of a previous work [\textit{T. V. Dudnikova, A. I. Komech, E. A. Kopylova} and \textit{Yu. M. Sukhov}, Commun. Math. Phys. 225, No. 1, 1--32 (2002; Zbl 1007.82014)] and the authors develop a probabilistic analysis for the linear wave equation in \(\mathbb R^n\), with odd \(n\geq 3\), and with constant or variable coefficients. It is studied the asymptotic behaviour of the distribution \(\mu_t\) of the random solution at time \(t\in\mathbb R\) as \(t\to\infty\). The main result is the convergence of \(\mu_t\) to a Gaussian measure \(\mu_\infty\) as \(t\to\infty\), which gives a central limit theorem for the wave equation. In the case of constant coefficients the proof is based on an analysis of long-time asymptotics of the solution in the Fourier representation and Bernstein's argument. The case of variable coefficients is analyzed by using a version of the scattering theory for infinite energy solutions, based on Vainberg's results on local energy decay.
