Given an Abelian group \(G\), denote by \(G^\#\) the topological group obtained by equipping \(G\) with the weakest topology that provides continuity for every group homomorphism into the multiplicative group \(T\) of complex numbers of modulus 1 with the topology inherited from the complex plane. \textit{E. K. van Douwen} [Topology Appl. 34, 35-45 (1990; Zbl 0715.54004)] asked whether the space \(G^\#\) depends only on the cardinality of \(G\). Even though there are non-isomorphic groups yielding the same \#-space (simple examples are to be found in \S 6 of the reviewer's doctoral thesis; the same occurs for the rationals \(\mathbb{Q}\) and \((\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z})\times Z\) as proved by \textit{W. W. Comfort, S. Hernández} and the reviewer [Topology Appl. 115, 215-233 (2001; Zbl 0986.22001)]), van Douwen's question was answered in the negative independently by the second author [Topology Appl. 90, 97-107 (1998; Zbl 0974.54025)] and by \textit{D. Dikranjan} and \textit{S. Watson} [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 163, 147-158 (2001; Zbl 0983.22001)]. In the paper under review the authors furnish additional examples in both directions: Let \(G\) and \(K\) be infinite Abelian groups. (a) If \(K\) is of prime exponent, then \(G^\#\) is homeomorphic to \(K^\#\) if and only if \(G\) is the product of \(K\) and a finite group. (b) If \(K\), but not \(G\), is of finite exponent, then \(G^\#\) is homeomorphic to no subspace of \(K^\#\).
