The authors consider manifolds obtained by Dehn surgery on closed pure 3-braids in \(S^3\) and show that for a large class of these links and for most surgeries, we cannot obtain a homotopy 3-sphere; in fact in many cases we obtain Haken or laminar manifolds. In their proofs, the authors construct a surface embedded in the complement of the closed pure braid which bounds a handlebody in \(S^3\) containing one component of the pure braid, and prove that the surface is incompressible in the complement of the closed pure braid for a large class of these links. Then the results follow from theorems in [\textit{M. Culler, C. McA. Gordon, J. Luecke}, and \textit{P. Shalen}, Ann. Math. 125, 237-300 (1987; Zbl 0633.57006) or \textit{C. McA. Gordon} and \textit{J. Luecke}, Topology 35, 385-409 (1996; Zbl 0859.57016)] and others.
