For a completely regular space \(X\), let \(C_p(X)\) denote the space of all continuous real-valued functions on \(X\), equipped with the pointwise convergence topology. The author gives an internal characterization of \(X\) such that \(C_p(X)\) is uniformly homeomorphic to the space \(C_p(I^n)\) of functions on the \(n\)-dimensional cube \(I^n= [0,1]^n\), as below. The spaces \(X\) and \(Y\) are \(u\)-equivalent if \(C_p(X)\) and \(C_p(Y)\) are uniformly homeomorphic; this is denoted by \(X^u\sim Y\). Main theorem 1. For every positive integer \(n\), a space \(X\) is \(u\)-equivalent to \(I^n\) if and only if the following conditions are satisfied: (a) \(X\) is \(n\)-dimensional, compact and metrizable, (b) Every nonempty closed subset \(A\) of \(X\) contains a non-empty relatively open subset \(U\) which can be embedded into \(I^n\).
