The paper under review studies different relationships between weighted inequalities for the Hardy operator on monotone functions, and normability properties of certain Lorentz spaces. In particular, for the space \[ \Gamma_{\alpha}^p(w)=\left\{f:{\mathbb R^n}\rightarrow{\mathbb R^+}, \left(\int_0^{\infty} (f^*(t))^{\alpha}(f^{**} (t))^{p-\alpha} w(t)\,dt \right)^{1/ p}<\infty\right\}, \] the following theorems are proved: If \(1\leq p<\infty\), then \(\Gamma_1^p(w)\) is a Banach space if and only if \(w\in R_p\), where \(R_p\) is the class of weights for which the Hardy operator is of restricted weak type \((p,p)\) for monotone characteristic functions (this class was introduced by \textit{C. J. Neugebauer} [Publ. Mat., Barc. {35}, 429--447 (1991; Zbl 0746.42014)]). If \(1<\alpha\leq p\), then \(\Gamma_{\alpha}^p(w)\) is a Banach space if and only if \(w\in B_p\), where \(B_p\) is the class of weights for which the Hardy operator is of strong type \((p,p)\) for monotone functions (this class was introduced by \textit{M. A. Ariño} and \textit{B. Muckenhoupt} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 320, 727--735 (1990; Zbl 0716.42016)]). Similar results hold for other values of \(\alpha\) and \(p\). The study of this kind of equivalences goes back to the paper of \textit{E. Sawyer} [Stud. Math. 96, 145--158 (1990; Zbl 0705.42014)] where he considered the normability properties of the classical Lorentz spaces \(\Lambda^p(w)\) in terms of the \(B_p\) condition, \(p>1\) (the case \(p=1\) was characterized by \textit{M. J. Carro}, \textit{A. García del Amo} and \textit{J. Soria} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 124, 849--857 (1996; Zbl 0853.42016)]). Another interesting result proved in this paper is the solution to the problem of finding the equivalent norm in \(\Lambda^1(w)\), for decreasing weights \(w\), in terms of the maximal function \(f^{**}\) (the case for \(\Lambda^p(w)\), with \(p>1\), was considered in the aforementioned paper of Sawyer). The characterization found shows that \(\Lambda^1(w)\) is one (and only one) of the following three spaces: \(\Gamma^1_0(v)\), \(L^1\), or \(\Gamma^1_0(v)\cap L^1\), for a suitable weight \(v\).
